January Highlights

This January, we went on our first ski trip of the year. Max and Dominic enjoyed skiing with Tim, Max’s dad, on the hard slopes, while Kester, Eli, and Eric all skied with Anita, Philipp and Mali on the easier slopes. Kester and Eli both skied for the first time, and did a great job! Our January theme was “Winter” and we made snowmen out of a lot of different materials in art class and hung them on the tree outside. Also in January, Ian, Eric, Max, Dominic, Kester, and Eli had fun with some new sensory integration activities, working on balance, team work, perseverance, coordination, trunk strength, social skills, posture, gross motor skills, motor control, flexibility, focus/concentration, and endurance.

December Highlights

December marks the beginning of Christmas celebrations at Side by Side, and we made some Christmas cards to send to some friends and family. Eli, Eric, Kester, Max, Dominic, and Ian went to the post office, glued and stamped their envelopes, and gave them to the postal worker to send. In the last week of term Max, Dominic, Eric, Eli, Ian, and Kester all decorated their recipe books, as well as their CDs and the songbooks with the songs they recorded in music therapy, and on the last day of term, we had a pizza party.

Max’s Birthday Celebration

Max’s birthday is during the Christmas holidays but we always celebrate it during the last week of term, so we can have fun celebrating with him. Max joined Dominic, Ian, Eric, Kester, and Eli in making his chocolate and vanilla birthday cake, and he was also lucky to receive some great presents.

Eric and Eli’s November Recipe Project

In November, we started our project of making recipes for our recipe book. Chef Max has already made us tomato pasta, Chef Ian egg muffins, Chef Kester roasted mushrooms, and Chef Dominic has made us fried rice! This week, Chef Eric made us mozzarella and pesto toasted sandwiches, and Chef Eli made us rosemary Brussels sprouts.

Dominic and Kester’s November Recipe Project

Eric and Kester’s Birthday Celebration

On Saturday it was Kester’s birthday, and on Monday it was Eric’s birthday, so we had a celebration for both of them on Monday. Eric turned 15 and Kester turned nine, and we celebrated with chocolate cake. Eric and Kester were lucky to also be given some presents.

Halloween at Side by Side

Halloween is always a fun time at Side by Side. We enjoy walking around the neighbourhood and looking at all of the scary decorations. Max, Dominic, Eric, Eli, Ian, and Kester all had fun scooping out pumpkin and pumpkin seeds, drawing and then cutting faces on their pumpkins to make jack-o-lanterns. On Friday, Side by Side was overtaken with two skeletons (otherwise known as Eric and Dominic), Darth Vadar (Eli), Batman (Kester), a Storm Trooper (Ian) and a Wanna-Be Pumpkin Turtle (Max). We all had fun lighting the candles and seeing the jack-o-lanterns glow.

October Highlights

This month Dominic, Max, Eric, Ian, Eli and Kester went on an excursion to buy fitness equipment for their indoor P.E. classes. They took busses and the subway to get to the store and tried the equipment. Once the treadmill, the cross trainer, the weights machine and the other equipment were delivered to Side by Side, the boys used them for indoor P.E. classes. This month’s topic was “Building Things” and so Max, Kester, Dominic, Eric, Eli, and Ian all had fun making boats out of foil, floating them, and then having a competition to see whose boat could hold the most beans before sinking, building a fort out of garden stakes and material, making towers with sugar cubes, and building creatively with our building kit. Kirsten started her work at Side by Side this month by dividing the group into pairs, and having each pair work together to make a car with a paper cup, straws, wooden skewers, play dough, and candles.

September Highlights

September’s monthly topic was sports. Dominic, Ian, Eric, Max, Eli, and Kester all enjoyed the creative game of trying to catch M&Ms in their mouths. We also played different games with our new basketballs, did some sport in the pool, and did some bowling. We also continued our autumn garden project.
